The Robert A. Lilly Photograph Collection consists of 30 black-and-white photographs, most of them real-photo postcards, with scenes of Ketchikan, Cordova, Chitina, Fairbanks, Tanana, and Fort Gibbon, Alaska. Other images include the Alaska Railroad, the Tanana Valley Railroad, the Gulkana Roadhouse, the vessels Northwestern and Yukon, and Alaskan wildlife. Also found in the collection are several newspaper clippings describing Lilly's trip to Fort Gibbon in 1920 and his impressions of Alaska's economic potential.

Robert A. Lilly was dispatched to Fort Gibbon, Alaska, in the fall of 1920 as an Army instructor. Having reached Seattle too late in the season to reach Fort Gibbon by ship and riverboat, he instead traveled by ship as far as Valdez or Cordova, Alaska, and then overland.
